Let’s unpack the essence of strong leadership. Learn how carrying a powerful mindset can awaken your potential and transform the lives of those you impact.
One of my goals in life is to impart vision and inspiration to other budding leaders. I see so much potential in those around me, and I feel it is a shame when that potential lies dormant and unfulfilled. Our society simply has too great of a deficit of solid, trustworthy leaders right now. We need more folks who can step up to the plate, with the right mindset to bring to the table.
When it comes to coaching and nurturing other fellow leaders, I have put a lot of thought into the kinds of values I would love to instill in them. The result is the following acronym: L.E.A.D.E.R. Each letter of this represents a value that is near and dear to my heart, that I would love to impart to those who are reflecting on their own personal growth journey.
I encourage you to consider how much of a role each of the following principles are playing in your life currently. Afterwards, think about what kind of role you would like them to have in your world in the days to come.
Cultivating these traits and principles will be a process, and it’s one that I feel confident is worth investing our time and energy towards.
The Makeup of A True L.E.A.D.E.R.
L – Love Others:
The bedrock of any effective leadership is sacrificial love. It’s about putting the needs of those around you above your own and practicing empathy. This means genuinely understanding and seeking to help those you lead. When leaders demonstrate love for those they serve, it builds trust and loyalty. This selflessness and care results in stronger teams and a more supportive environment where everyone knows how valued they are.
Love in leadership is not about cheap sentimentality; it’s about action. It’s about making decisions that benefit the whole group, even if they come at a personal cost. Compassion, kindness, and genuine concern for others create a foundation for maintaining the respect and admiration of those you are guiding, for the long haul.
E – Encourage a Culture of Growth:
Leaders are the catalysts for growth within their teams. Instead of micromanaging, successful leaders empower their followers by removing obstacles and providing the necessary resources and support for their personal and professional development. This encouragement fuels an environment where individuals feel confident to take risks, innovate, and grow.
When leaders focus on growth, they create a dynamic and forward-thinking culture. This culture encourages continuous learning and improvement, making sure that the team is always evolving and adapting to new challenges. A leader’s role is to nurture this reality, helping each team member reach their fullest potential and achieve their highest goals.
A – Advance the Thoughts of Others:
A leader’s success is often measured by their ability to inspire and bring to surface the original thoughts and insights of their followers. This means encouraging a value for ideation and innovation. Leaders should create an atmosphere where every team member feels comfortable sharing their ideas, knowing that their contributions are heard and appreciated.
A culture of active listening and empowerment leads to a more capable and effective team. By encouraging creative thinking and providing opportunities for collaboration, leaders help their teams generate new, breakthrough solutions and approaches. This benefits the team and drives the organization forward – more effectively harnessing everyone’s passions and diverse, unique perspectives.
D – Direct Group Focus:
One of the primary roles of a leader is to provide clear direction and focus for the team. This involves setting a clear vision and communicating it effectively to ensure everyone is aligned and working towards the same goals. A focused team is a productive team.
Leaders must be adept at prioritizing tasks, managing resources, and maintaining a clear vision amidst challenges. When providing direction, they help everyone stay on track and avoid distractions. This clarity of purpose motivates and guides others, making sure that everyone understands their role and knows how it fits into where they are heading together.
E – Entertain the Impossible:
Great leaders have the vision to entertain the impossible. They are not constrained by what is currently possible but are always looking ahead to what could be. This mindset involves asking “what if” and “can we” to push the boundaries of positive change and progress.
When dreaming big and encouraging their teams to do the same, leaders encourage the development of zeal, ambition and creativity. This visionary mindset inspires others to think beyond their own limitations and to explore new possibilities. Those who are able to see reality like this always challenge the status quo and drive more real, transformative change.
R – Represent Moral Standards:
Leaders are role models whose actions and behaviors set the pace for others to follow. They pioneer a culture of integrity and accountability by upholding strong moral principles. Their actions serve as standards for others to follow, showing that ethical behavior supports (rather than detracts from) achieving real influence.
When leaders act with integrity, they build trust and credibility with their team too. This is incredibly key for long term success.
Representing strong values means making decisions that are fair, transparent, and in line with your organization’s values. This ethical foundation guarantees that the team will operate with a shared sense of purpose and a commitment to doing the right thing, the right way.
